| You're meeting a Mäori cultural worker at the
home of a Mäori family to talk with them and their son Joe who is your
patient. You arrive 10 minutes after the cultural worker. At the front door you
see a number of pairs of shoes and boots outside on the verandah, and are met
at the door by the Joe's mother. It's a cold wintery day. What is the best way
to proceed, of the following choices? |

| 2 |
| Inside the house, you find Joe and several of his whänau,
including Joe's maternal grandfather, his cousin, his mother and his older
brother. The cultural worker from your team has already arrived and has been
chatting with them. You're aware you've been running a bit late and that
you have another meeting back at the hospital later in the afternoon. What is
the best way to proceed? |

|
|
| |
| 3 |
| The whänau sit everyone down in the living room, and
there's a brief pause, then Joe's grandfather gets up and makes a speech in
Mäori followed by what seems to be a prayer in Mäori, after which everyone says
'amene'. You're aware of your busy schedule and are feeling anxious about the
time. What is your best course of action? |
| |
|
|
| |
| 4 |
| You've had a good discussion with Joe and his whänau
about his condition and how best to help them all to manage it. A plan has been
made as to what needs to happen next. You're feeling a lot more relaxed with
Joe and his family now, but are still aware of your next appointment which is
in half an hour. How do you help close the meeting? |
| |
|
|
| |
| 5 |
| After Joe's grandfather has closed the meeting with a
speech and another prayer, people get up and stretch and Joe's mother offers
you all a cup of tea. You're still concerned about your next appointment as
there isn't much time now to get back to the hospital. How do you proceed? |
